Japan is a great place. Not only do they celebrate their own holidays but Western holidays as well. Very often however there is a twist. At Christmas, everyone celebrates the fun present giving aspect without anyone asking you to remember the true meaning of Christmas, here present giving fun time IS the true meaning of Christmas.
Valentine’s Day has been changed by the Japanese even more. Here Valentine’s Day is not the day when the man has to make a special effort lest he be chastised by his better half. Oh no, here it is the women’s job to do something special. That special thing seems to have become giving chocolate.
Also, rather uniquely, ladies are expected not only to give chocolates to that special someone in their lives but also just about every man she knows. Valentine’s Day chocolate is separated into two categories, Giri Choco (obligatory chocolate) and Honmei Choco (chocolate for the man the woman is serious about). I hear that women are expected to buy about 30 boxes of Giri Choco for the men around the office and other guys she socialises with.
Lord knows how the chocolate companies managed to pull this kind of deal off but they actually managed it twice. The one sidedness of Valentine’s Day is balanced by a Japanese only holiday, White Day. White Day occurs one month after Valentine’s Day (March 14th). On this day men who received Honmei Choco are expected to give white chocolate to the lady he got it from. The chocolate companies of Japan (who invented White Day) must be laughing all the way to the bank during the first quarter of the year.
If you are wondering what I am doing for Valentine’s Day, I’m not going to tell you, it’s a secret. I do have to say though, I have always had wild plans for romantic gestures for days like this but never anyone to do them for. For example, a few years ago a friend of mine fancied an Irish bar girl, I suggested to him that he should do something special for her on St. Patrick’s day. I proposed that he could buy a single white rose, dip the stem in black paint and offer it to her along with a confession of his love.
He never did.
Since then I have been wishing to fall in love with an Irish woman, so I can put this plan into action.
I recently discovered that pita bread is known as pita pan in Japanese. The pita bread merchandising board of Japan are missing a trick not partnering with Disney.
